Podcasting – Five years on… PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 02 August 2010 14:48
Speaker: Professor John Fothergill, University of Leicester, UK.

Date: 11 Aug 2010, 10.30am - 11.30am British Summer Time

About the seminar: Podcasting has come a long way since the word ‘podcast’ became the Word of the Year in the New Oxford American Dictionary. Many teachers in universities, colleges and schools now use podcasts to support their students’ learning. There are many examples of students creating podcasts as part of course activity.

But what is it like for a university professor to podcast, year after year for five years? Especially if you were a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and a leader of a world-class research group?

Professor John Fothergill, Head of the Department of Engineering and former Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Leicester will share his experience of using podcasts for teaching an undergraduate module on Optical Fibre Communications since 2006.

John’s course is unusual in that it is delivered entirely on-line using the University’s Blackboard VLE, with some face-to-face tutorial support. John used podcasts to help his students to develop good online learning and collaborative skills.

It would be an absolute treat to listen to John, reflecting on his creation and use of podcasts with his students for the last 5 years.

John plans to share his experience of using learning technologies to address the challenges of teaching a subject like Engineering. He will provide a convincing argument for incorporating low cost, high impact e-learning technologies such as podcasts into teaching and learning process to support student learning. This is all possible, he will argue, no matter how busy you are as an academic – after all, John was a Pro Vice Chancellor at Leicester when he started to use podcasts! In the seminar, John will outline the pedagogical model that he developed to design his course to integrate various e-learning approaches including podcasts and e-tivities. And, no doubt John will share insights about how his students reacted to podcasts.

To take part: Participation is free of charge, and all you need is an internet-connected computer browser and speakers or headphones; microphone - if you would like to ask questions by speaking; alternatively you may type questions into the chat box. Please click on the link below to join the seminar online (log in as a guest, please):

Once you are in the room, please select from the top menu Meeting – Auto Setup Wizard and run through the audio checks to make sure everything will work nicely. You can do this anytime from now until the start of the seminar; please feel free to do so if you’d like to check your equipment.

ENGAGE Workshop: Jogos Educativos e Recursos Educativos Digitais no Ensino: novos conceitos em contexto curricular para uma escola de sucesso…? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 14 July 2010 11:55
Workshop on the 8th of September for teachers and practitioners in Primary and Secondary Education. The workshop is partly held in Portuguese, thus the text is translated.

Opening Education: Inclusive - Innovative - Excellent PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 12:49

EFQUEL Innovation Forum 2010Brussels, June 2010: This year’s EFQUEL Innovation Forum, the fourth in the highly successful series of European gatherings, will take place in Lisbon, Portugal in collaboration with the Catholic University of Portugal and the National Institute for Public Administration Portugal. From September 8-10, 2010, in the Palace of the former Marquises of Pombal, in Oeiras, Lisbon, and surrounded by beautiful gardens, the annual assembly of eLearning and education professionals will debate how opening education can contribute to social inclusion agendas and promote economic wellfare through better equipping citizens with necessary skills.

Open educational resources (OER) are high on the agenda of social and inclusion policies and supported by many stakeholders of the educational sphere. User Generated Content is more relevant than ever, and co- and peer-production increasingly at the heart of content development. At the same time assessment and quality assurance processes are put to test because long introduced expert and teacher led approaches of assessing quality seem to loose effect in view of user created content and free available resources. Opening education promotes social inclusion agendas and supports economic programs by raising participation and supporting the development of new skills. It leads away from traditional business models and frees energy for innovation.

During the EFQUEL forum the delegates will produce recommendations in interactive workshop discussions on the following topics:

  • Open Educational Practices
  • User Generated Content
  • Self-Evaluation and Learning Organization
  • Equal access to Higher Education
  • Research in E-Learning

Four ambassador teams will challenge the participants to relate their debates to the four important topics around inclusion innovation and excellence: a) Enabling Participation, b) Improving Employability, c) Strengthening Intercultural Dialogue & understanding and d) Developing Skills to shape the future. Delegates are encouraged to present their own projects and initiatives in this field in form of a short case, a poster or in interactive discussions.

Each workshop will follow the same rhythm in order to weave the topics together by following the central question: “How can we reach social inclusion, innovation and excellence?” During the second day, this question will be discussed in newly assembled groups and finally reflected in a roundtable discussion, representing the policy, academia and corporate sector. EFQUEL will take the important recommendations from delegates further into shaping its work agenda to contribute to a Europe of inclusion, innovation and excellence through education.

The EFQUEL Innovation Forum is a great opportunity for action oriented participation, sharing ideas, building and enlarging networks and exchanging visions. The atmosphere is open and dialogue-oriented.

Participants who are registering before the 30th of June 2010 are profiting from a reduced Early Bird Fee.

Adobe joins the European Foundation for Quality in E-Learning PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Monday, 21 June 2010 11:27
Adobe LogoLondon (UK), June 2010 - Adobe is widely recognized in the scene of E-Learning professionals as one of the global leaders for authorware in E-Learning production. Through joining the European Foundation for Quality in E-Learning (EFQUEL), Adobe is providing their support to the academic, corporate and government sectors to promote and support the production of high quality e-Learning content. One of the targets of the EFQUEL is to develop suitable standards to ensure the creation and the management of high-quality E-Learning content, which can be produced with Adobe’s eLearning Suite.

“Immediately after the first meetings we had with Adobe, we saw great potential for fruitful collaboration. In particular, we have discussed the quality management of peer produced content in Vocational Education & Training“, reports Claudio Dondi, president of EFQUEL. “More and more, rapid E-Learning tools such as Adobe Captivate and others are used in corporations and universities with the objective to enable subject matter experts to share their knowledge easily with colleagues.“

Christie Fidura, European Marketing Manager of Adobe, believes that in the last few years, Adobe has successfully improved both the usability and compatibility of its e-Learning content creation tools. “The Adobe tools, packed into a single suite, are easy-to-use and therefore, can be used by anyone to share skills and knowledge. Although we are enabling subject matter experts to create content simply, we also need to ensure we address the importance of developing high-quality content. Whilst many of the big corporations are already using a Learning Management System, there has yet to be an agreement on which standards should be used to produce high quality e-Learning content. Adobe will also be actively contributing towards the improvements of both quality management mechanisms such as course development processes and quality assurance of content. These will in turn play an important role in achieving a broader consensus on which quality standards should be considered as best practice.“

“The E-Learning tools are much better now than 10 years ago”, states Rolf Reinhardt, Executive Manager of EFQUEL, “and we can create media, like audio, graphics and videos, nowadays so easily. There is a trend that ICT in learning and teaching is becoming more mainstreamed. This is also true for knowledge management and skill development within corporations. But without a comprehensive E-Learning strategy, policies and quality guidelines, the full potential of ICT and E-learning cannot be reached.”

EFQUEL’s members represent the leading organisations in the field of quality in E-Learning such as European networks, universities and research centers. In addition EFQUEL serves as a bridge between Europe and other regions of the world, having partnerships to quality agencies with Africa, Latin America and Asia. EFQUEL brings together leaders, on a policy, academia and corporate level. Interested organizations are finding more information about the benefits of joining EFQUEL on its website www.efquel.org

Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 02 June 2010 18:23
Have you ever attended a workshop that took hours to travel to, only to find out that the agenda items and discussion was not quite what you expected? Well here is your opportunity to join in from the comfort of your own home or office and also to lead a creative conversation with other members of the global OER community on a topic of your choice.

You are invited to virtually attend an Open Educational Resources (OER) symposium on 5 July 2010 (10am to 4pm BST) with the Beyond Distance Research Alliance (BDRA) from the University of Leicester. The event will be facilitated by members of the OTTER team [http://www.le.ac.uk/otter].

The symposium will be entirely online and will be run as an "open space" workshop. Following open space philosophy, participants will be in charge of everything and will take responsibility for agenda/topic setting and leadership. (You can read more about open space methodology at [http://www.openspaceworld.com/brief_history.htm]. We will be adapting this methodology for the online environment)

Do you have something to share? This is your opportunity to set the agenda! Which aspects of OERs do you feel passionate about? Which aspects would you like to put proposals to the OER community in? What OER achievements would you like to boast about? How do you see the global OER community collaborating in the future for the benefit of learners and educators around the world? If you are passionate about a particular topic or theme related to OERs, please also sign up to lead a creative conversation on that topic! It won't happen if you don't make it happen!

This workshop is FREE. Thanks to the JISC & HEA for sponsorship.

From Belgium to Taiwan: EFQUEL connects members from all over the world PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Tuesday, 20 April 2010 08:19

Stella and Pascal in TaiwanOn the 15th of April 2010, two member organisations of EFQUEL, the Agence Wallonne des Télécommunications (Belgium) and the e-Learning Quality Certification Center (Taiwan), held a casual meeting in Taipei.

Both organisations are providing quality standard schemes to the E-Learning community in their countries. Thus, the topics to discuss have been the development and acceptance of standards. Also the possibility of starting a Special Interest Group (SIG) on labelling E-Learning courses was taken in consideration and is foreseen in the next weeks.

The Agence Wallonne des Télécommunications and eLearning Quality Service Center are government-funded offices, thus the experience of organizational operation could be shared and the policy of ICT use in education in both Belgium and Taiwan was compared.

Vice-President Ulf-Daniel Ehlers who has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the eLearning Certification Center in Taiwan, is convinced that connecting organisations which are dealing with topics related to quality and eLearning makes EFQUEL so interesting for its members.

During the EFQUEL Innovation Forum 2009, Rolf Reinhardt (Executive Manager of EFQUEL) introduced Pascal Balancier (Agence Wallonne des Télécommunications, Belgium) to Stella Chiu from the e-Learning Quality Certification Center in Taiwan: "It is important for European organisations to also benchmark themselves with our friends and colleagues from other continents. By this, EFQUEL is aggregating information and skills from all over to world to share it with our members".

Short profile of the eLearning Quality Service Center (ELQSC):

The previously named "e-Learning Quality Certification Center" in Taiwan was renamed as e-Learning Quality Service Center (ELQSC) since 2010. The ELQSC is moving forward toward a multi-tasking organization. They provide services to E-Learning providers, governmental institutions, users, and schools in order to improve the quality of E-Learning courses and implementation. The objective of ELQSC quality mark is to foster confidence between users and providers.
